Major General George Henry Thomas (byname: Rock of Chickamauga; 1816-1870) was a Union officer assigned to the Western Theater of operations, and through much of the war the commanding general of the Army of the Cumberland. A thorough, methodical planner, Thomas would engage in battle when sure of the outcome at the least expense of troops and supplies; in defense he was impregnable, in attack he was unstoppable. Thomas' number of victories are unmatched by any general in the war, and he was the only one on either side to have completely annihilated two armies on the battlefield.
